Student Support: Residential Network
ResNet is the residential computer network service provided to students living at John Brown University. ResNet provides you with a connection to JBU servers and the Internet from your room. The following topics provide information about the setup and configuration of your computer for use on ResNet and how to keep your computer secure.
Getting connected
What do I need to get on the network?
- Functional computer with the latest security updates for its given operating system. Windows 95, 98, ME and 2000 are not supported and will not connect to the JBU network.
- Symantec Antivirus provided by JBU installed on your computer.
- Network interface card (NIC), also known as an ethernet card.
- Patch cable (not the same as a phone cord), or alternatively, wireless capability.
How do I connect my computer?
- Insert one end of your patch cable into the ethernet port in your computer.
- Insert the other end of the patch cable into the ethernet jack in the wall (not the phone jack). Some of the jacks are marked with a D for Data and a V for Voice or are colored coded Blue for Data and Black for Voice. Plug your ethernet cable into the D and/or blue jack.
- Turn on your computer. After you turn on your computer you should see a blinking green and/or orange light next to where you plugged the patch cable into your computer. If you don't see a blinking light then you probably do not have connectivity. Here are some things to check:
- Did you plug into the correct port in the wall -- Data port and not the Voice port?
- Do you have the correct kind of cable? An ethernet cable and not a phone cord.
- Could your ethernet cable be defective? That is possible. Find a cable that is working (i.e. your roommates) and try it on your computer. If you get lights then your cable is bad, if not then it is probably something else.
If you have checked all of the above and you still do not have connectivity then please contact the Help Desk or come by Walker 233 to sign up for a time for a Student Technology Assistant to visit your room and find a fix for the problem.
I'm plugged in and have lights -- now what?
- Antivirus software
- Clean Access Agent
- Logging in to the network
All students computers are required to run JBU-provided antivirus software, Symantec AntiVirus. Before you install the antivirus software provided by JBU, please uninstall any antivirus software that you have on your computer. Installing an antivirus software program on top of an already existing program could cause problems with your computer.
The Clean Access Agent is a small piece of software that will be installed on Windows computers. It is used to make sure your computer meets the requirements for access to the network.
All users will be required to login to use the JBU network.
FAQ
Do I need a firewall?
JBU operates an Internet firewall that provides security from most
Internet attacks. There is little we can do to protect your computer
from other residents. We encourage you to use the firewall that comes
with your operating system.
What kind of computer do I need to buy?
You may want to wait to decide what kind of computer to buy until you
have been on campus for a little while. The answer may vary depending on
your major. If you are in a major that uses computers a lot, you may
want to speak to your instructor to see if they recommend a certain type
of computer -- Windows or Macintosh.
How do I connect my Macintosh?
As long as you have an Ethernet card and Ethernet cable you will be
able to connect in your room. You will be required to login to get on
the Internet but many of the Clean Access requirements do not apply to
the Mac OS system. Antivirus software for Mac is available for download.
Can I set up a wireless router/access point?
No. Please leave wireless access points at home. We provide wireless
access in the residence halls as well as wired ports in all of the
rooms. Wireless access points can interfere with JBU's network
equipment.
