General Support: Passwords
Passwords are the primary authentication method for University technology resources. Passwords ensure that only authorized individuals have access to specific computer systems and establish accountability for all changes made to system resources. Poorly chosen passwords and/or sharing your password with others may compromise sensitive information that they are designed to protect.
Students, faculty, and staff are continually gaining access to a greater amount of information tailored to the specific individual. In addition to private information, the ability to access many independent systems with a single sign-on highlights the need for strict password management. The University recognizes the need to require password changes at regular intervals which meet some basic complexity requirements outlined below.
For additional information on password and account policies, see the Acceptable Use Policy.
Password requirements
- Passwords must be at least 6 (six) characters in length.
- Passwords will expire every 6 (six) months.
- Passwords should not be written down, emailed, or spoken.
- Passwords should be kept confidential and not shared with anyone.
- Your username or variations of it should not be embedded in your password.
- Consider creating passwords that meet strong complexity requirements by including characters from at least 3 of the 4 following groups:
- English uppercase characters (A through Z)
- English lowercase characters (a through z)
- Digits (0 through 9)
- Non-alphanumeric (for example, !,$,#,%), symbolic, or linguistic characters
