Attachment size limits
Internal email, to another jbu.edu address, does not currently have a size limitation. However, external email, to any address other than jbu.edu, currently has a limitation of 4 megabytes.

If you have an announcement that you think needs to be distributed campus-wide there are specific procedures to get this done. Do not send email messages to everyone on the JBU address list. This is a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy. Students may submit announcements they would like distributed to Glenda Manos. Faculty and staff may submit announcements to Patti Hutto or Melinda Douglass.

There are two methods available for accessing your JBU email account from off-campus:
Method 1: Outlook Web Access
- Using a web browser, browse to http://eagle.jbu.edu (EagleNET).
- Click the Check Email link.
- You will be prompted to login with your network username and password.

Method 2: POP3/IMAP
If you are connected directly to the JBU network from a JBU campus facility, the POP3/IMAP settings are:
- Incoming mail server(POP3/IMAP): pop.jbu.edu
- Outgoing mail server(SMTP): mailgate.jbu.edu
- Incoming mail server(POP3/IMAP): pop.jbu.edu
- Outgoing mail server(SMTP): Provided by your ISP*
Quarantined Attachments
Viruses are a huge problem, causing individual computer down time to entire network down time. Many viruses come through email attachments. We have decided to not allow some attachments to come into your mailbox to reduce the chances of your computer and/or the JBU network from contracting a virus. These messages are "quarantined" and can be recovered by a network administrator if they are legitimate. You can contact the help desk to have attachments recovered. Here is a list of attachment file types that will be quarantined. This list changes as new viruses come out and take advantage of certain file types.

Retention after graduation
After you graduate from JBU your email account will remain active for 1 year. At the end of that year your account will be deleted.

Spam filtering is available for students, faculty, and staff accounts. You will receive an email message detailing the spam messages which are currently stored in your account quarantine. If no messages are currently stored there, you won’t receive a report. The report message should look similar to this:

If you would like to release a specific message listed from quarantine, select the black Release link on the right side of that particular item.
If you would like to automatically receive all messages from a particular sender, select the green Always Allow link and messages from that sender will always bypass the spam filter and be delivered to your inbox.
If you would like to never receive messages from the specified sender again, select the red Deny link and messages from that sender will never be delivered to your inbox or even show up in your spam report.
Messages are stored in quarantine for only about 7 days, so you may want to have your quarantine report delivered frequently so you do not miss any real messages by mistake. The message filtering is not perfect, so review your reports often until you have a comfort level with the filtering logic.
At the bottom of your spam report email message is a link that allows you to customize your preferences and spam report settings. It will open a browswer window and load a page similar to the one below.

Across the top of the Setup page you have the options of Quarantine, Allow/Deny, and Setup.
- Quarantine will show a listing of all of the messages that the spam filter currently has in your quarantine.
- Allow/Deny allows you to manage lists of address that you wish to always allow or always deny through the filter:
- Setup allows you to change your preferences and spam report settings.

Storage limits
Many users at some point will receive a message saying that, 'Your mailbox is over its size limit.' This message is telling you that your mailbox is too large, and needs to be cleaned up. If you ignore it for too long, you may reach a size limit that will prevent you from sending or receiving mail.
Our email server has a lot of space, but it is not unlimited. For that reason, we have set three step limits on student mailboxes:
- At 300 Megabytes, you get a daily warning message
- At 350 Megabytes, you will not be able to send mail
- At 400 Megabytes, your mailbox will reject incoming messages.
If you are receiving the "size limit" message or would just like to prevent receiving it in the future, please take the following steps:
- For messages you want to save, open the message and use File/Save As... to place a copy into your My Documents folder, network home folder (M:), or a backup device.
- Do the same with large attachments in messages (Copy them to your My Documents folder, network home drive (M:), or a backup device).
- Delete unneeded and saved messages from your Inbox, Sent Items, and Drafts Folders. (A copy of an unsent message is automatically saved to the drafts folder. This is a place where users commonly forget to check when searching for space-consuming messages)
- Delete all messages from your Deleted Items folder (do this last). If you do not delete the messages from Deleted Items, they are still in your mailbox.
